He formulated the Law of Definite Proportions, thus disproving the theory of C. L. Berthollet, who believed compounds always had variable compositions. He also was the first Professor of Chemistry at Seminario Vergara in Spain in 1777, where the Elhuyar brothers first prepared metallic tungsten.
