Vergara (spelled "Bergara" by the local Basque and in English) is the site where metallic tungsten was first isolated by the Elhuyar brothers, and where malleable platinum was first prepared by Chabaneau. Vergara is in the Western Pyrnees Mountains, in the middle of Basque country. From France, one crosses the border at Hendaye, France, to Irún, Spain. Then one can travel to Vergara by automobile on scenic, well-kept highways. The main highway A8, then N-1, takes one from Irún to Beasain, (intersection "1"; N43 02.69 W2 12.74) where one turns onto GI-632 which takes one to Vergara. The trip from Irún to Beasain is 55 km; from Beasain to Vergara another 20 km.
