This is a street sketch of Sabará. The various numbers identify churches and other buildings. No. 7 is Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, and no. 15 is Museu do Ouro. Belo Horizonte is reached by using the road to the extreme left (marked B.H.), 24 km away by a winding road. The Rio das Velhas (River of the Old Ladies) was once much wider; ships brought thousands of slaves up from the coast to work the mines. Rio das Velhas flows northward, finally joining Rio São Francisco, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Nova Lima is 10 km to the south (27 km by road) -- the deepest gold mine anywhere in the world other than South Africa. One can still pan the rivers and streams for gold flakes, but the nuggets are long gone.
