Case A. In this device, radium salt at the bottom emitted alpha rays which were studied by a gold-leaf electrometer in the upper chamber. The effect of a strong magnet showed the charge of alpha particles was opposite to that of beta particles (it was later shown that alpha particles were helium nuclei and beta particles were electrons).
