Previous | Home | NextNew Granada was a viceroyalty, a Spanish colony, established in 1717 corresponding to modern Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador. This map is of "Gran Colombia," which existed 1819-1831, which roughly corresponded to the original colony of New Granada after independence had been won from Spain in 1819. (In 1831 Venezuela and Ecuador became independent countries. Panama tried to break away from Colombia but was successful only in 1903 did Panama separate, in connection with the construction of the Panama Canal by the U.S.)
