Along the way are reminders of the dual culture: painted on the wall is the old name of the street: "Fünfkirchen Gasse" = "Petikostelská ulice" (each translated as "Five Church Street"). The modern sign "Snemovní/Malá Strana - Praha 1" translates "Congress/Little Side [town] - Prague zone 1." Malá Strana, hugging the lower foundations of the Prague Castle, was historically the ethnic center of the German population of Prague. The Bohemian Czech populaton resided mostly across the river on the east bank.
