Today the Golden Alley is a popular tourist site, lined by souvenir shops. These shops originally housed castle guardsmen of Emperor Rudolph II (1576–1611) who constructed these houses in 1597. Emperor Rudolph II moved the Royal court from Vienna to Prague, at which time Bohemia became the center of the Empire.
