Fair Hill was ransacked and burned by a mob whose numbers were reported at 2000-3000. Virtually all of Priestley's manuscripts and laboratory equipment was destroyed. By the morning of 15 July the damage had been complete. Having looted the cellars, many of the mob remain drunk lying in the fields about on the property. Painting by Johann Eckstein (1736-1817).
