Previous | Home | NextA rugby game in 1870. In the mid-nineteenth century William Gilbert, bootmaker of High Street, made footballs for the boys of Rugby School. The ball was originally large and round, its shape determined by the inflated pig's bladder inside, and was covered by four pieces of leather. By the mid-1900s the oval shape -- easier to pass and carry -- had become the norm.
