The summer of 1618 experienced a serious drought; water sources dried up. A cowherd named Henry Wicker found a spring on a common (a tract of land used by a community as a whole and accessible to all); however, his cattle refused to drink. The water attracted the attention of others and soon visiters came to avail themselves of the "medicinal properties" of the water.
