Wine Office Court is another court projecting northward off Fleet Street, 130 meters east of Crane Court. It takes its name from the Excise Office that existed here until 1665. This court held the publishing offices of Crookes' Chemical News during the period 1861-1867. Crookes founded this journal in 1859 and it continued past his death in 1919. Initially the publishing offices were in Red Lion Court (100 meters west); in 1868 they moved to Boy Court [no longer exists], Ludgate Hill (250 meters west). This was the publication in which he announced his discovery of thallium in 1861 {LINK: London2G-216} and his his spectral verification of terrestrial helium in 1985 {LINK: London5-035}.
