He preached his last sermon at Gravel Pit Chapel on 30 March 1794, and then sailed for New York. During his eight-week transit (April 8-June 4, 1794) across the Atlantic which witnessed "icebergs and waterspouts, Lavoisier was guillotined in Paris. {LINK: ParisC325}. It is believed that if he had stayed in England, Priestley would have been arrested for treason owing to his French sympathies.
