After his father died, Henry Cavendish purchased an apartment in Hampstead, a northern suburb of London, which was attractive because of its clean air and because Cavendish liked its view over the sprawling city below. The apartment was on Church row, one of a number of identical dwellings stretching to the St. John at Hampstead Church. The view is taken from the beginning of Church Row, looking westward to St. John in the distance. He only lived here three years, 1782-1785.
