Market Street is the predominant feature and the center of the city. Market Street after running one kilometer 1 km east from the river turns to the right and develops into London Road (London is 260 km away). The area about the Literary and Philosophical Society where John Dalton engaged in his activities are being developed. Dalton would use the extensive library at Chetham for his studies. Manchester Cathedral dates from the 8th century; construction on the present building began in 1215. St. Ann's Church lost its steeple in 1777 owing to an earthquake. St. Mary's Church fell victim to the Industrial Age as the urban population moved outwards into new suburbs; it was demolished in 1891 and the site became Parsonage Gardens.
