Inside the old Owens College (now an office building for barristers) is a small museum display. This is an original sample of diethyl zinc, prepared by Frankland. His pioneering work with organometallic compounds allowed him to arrive of the concept of valence, where each atom had a limited combining power. This idea allowed the basis for the grouping of elements in the Periodic Table. Frankland also assisted Lockyer {LINK: London2E-305} in the discovery of helium.
