The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, located 200 meters southwest of the old Owens College, is located at the site of the Liverpool Road Railway Station, the oldest railway station in the world, opening in 1830. This station was the terminus of the world's first intercity passenger railway, connecting Manchester with Liverpool, 50 km to the west. The main purpose of the railway was to connect the port of Liverpool with its import of raw textile materials to the Manchester area which produced the finished cotton goods.
