In 1873 Owens College moved to new buildings on Oxford Road. In 1880 the Victoria University was the name adopted by the college, later changed to the Victoria University of Manchester. In 2004 the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology was absorbed, and the modern name University of Manchester was adopted. The University of Manchester boasts the third largest list of Nobel Laureates in Great Britain (after Oxford and Cambridge Universities). In this photo, on the west side of Oxford Road, across from Brunswick Street, is the Whitworth Hall, built in 1902, forming the center of the present university. The view is west.
