Frequent scenes are graduation processions passing through on their way to receiving diplomas in the Sheldonian Theater just to the northwest. The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest in Europe, and in Great Britain is second in size only to the British Library. It is named after Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) who developed the library, starting in 1598, after it had deteriorated to the state that all of its furniture had been sold and only three of its original books remained.
