Priestley arrived in Warrington in 1761 to find a vibrant city much more to his liking -- a manufacturing town with ready transportation to London and other centers. But more importantly, it was an academic center, with a publication house and the growing Warrington Academy where Priestley could exercise his talents as a teacher-scholar. This is the modern view of Bridge Street, looking south from a vantage point near Academy Way.
