Warrington, England/warrington490Previous | Home | NextThis is a more complete water color of Warrington Academy, looking southward on Academy Way. The date again is 1762. Priestley's home was in one of the tutor's houses flanking the entrance on the east (right) side. Students were taken in to board with the tutors. Soon Priestley's laboratory and study were set apart from the main buildings because of the constant risk of explosion or fire. This was the first Dissenting Academy specifically planned in England. Priestley became ordained and married Mary Wilkinson while in Warrington. This and the following sketch were done by Arthur Bennett (1862-1912), denizen of Warrington. Bennett wrote "Songs of a Chartered Accountant" (which was his profession) and "Dreams of a Warringtonian." |
