In addition to his research in explosives for the Arsenal, Cruickshank introduced chlorine fumigation of hospital wards; pioneered the analysis of sugars in urine; invented the Trough Battery, which used an electrolyte solution instead of moistened paper between electrodes; and was perhaps the first the electroplate metals such as silver and copper.
