"On 22 April 1370, the provost Auriot Hughes laid the cornerstone of a fortress intended to protect Paris eastward. In four sequences construction was continued by Charles V, then Charles VI, then a bastion added by Henri II. In the towers of the Bastille prisoners were kept. The taking of the Bastille has become the symbol of monarchal despotism on 14 July 1789, when seven prisoners were released in triumph."
