Previous | Home | NextThis magnificent bronze monument of Lavoisier, inaugurated 27 July 1900, once stood on the Place de la Madeleine in back (north side) of the church (hence, the view is south). Marcellin Pierre Eugène Berthelot (1827-1907), French chemist and politician, was to preside over the ceremony, but illness kept him away and the address was read by Jean Gaston Darboux (1842-1917), French mathematician. The inscription below: "Antoine Laurent Lavoisier 1743-1894. Founder of modern chemistry. Erected by public subscription, under the patronage of the Academy of Sciences. M. Bertholet, Permament Secretary of the Physical Sciences, 1900." Moissan was an active participant in raising support for the statue.
