About the courtyard was the site of the actual laboratory where the gallium research was conducted in 1875, in laboratories fashioned from old medical pavilions. These laboratories existed approximately 1850-1876. Wurtz had a new laboratory built which was available for research in 1877; this laboratory was at the corner of Rue Hautefeuille and Rue de l'École de Médecine, behind the viewer.
