On Rue Monge (across the street from the birthplace of Bernard Courtois, the discoverer of iodine) is the old Academie de Dijon 51 Rue Monge, founded in 1725. In 1775 it became the Academie des Sciences, Arts, et Belle-Lettres [science, arts, and literature] de Dijon. Courtois' father Jean-Baptiste, once a wine merchant, was a laboratory assistant here, then a full-time demonstrator who could teach courses. Under these surroundings Bernard Courtois gained a quality education in chemistry.
