"Tribute to Louis Pasteur. Founded microbiology here. Lille 1857."
The claim that he founded microbiology in Lille is perhaps a stretch, since Robert Koch is customarily credited with sharing the honors. Pasteur was Dean of the University of Lille 1854-1857 and during that time he solved the problem of the souring of the alcohol product at a fermentation plant in Lille. The date 1857 marked a seminal paper on lactic fermentation by Pasteur which some identify with the "birth of microbiology." Pasteur next moved to Paris to the École Normale Supérieure {LINK: ParisF334}
