At the corner of Rue de lÉcole de Pharmacie and Rue de Calvaire is this plaque reminding us of an even earlier history; this is the original university of Montpellier which was established in 1289 (see next photo). Notice the white sign with red lettering; it is written in the old language Occitan (very similar to Catalan), which was the original Romance language in this region. In Occitan, "street" is not "rue" as in French, but instead "Carrièra."
