Gallium was found in sulfides, mainly "le blende" (sphalerite, zinc sulfide). Sphalerite from deposits in the Ordovician and Devonian rocks of the French central Pyrénées contain several gallium (and germanium) rich mineral phases. Gallium rarely forms specific-composition compounds and instead is admixtured as a dispersion in other minerals. The sphalerite which Boisbaudran investigated contained minor amounts of gallium which he detected by the recently discovered method of spectroscopy.
