This building was extensively damaged during World War II, but has been repaired and remodeled to appear the same as the original -- as is so often with buildings in Germany. This "Free University" was founded during the American occupation of West Berlin in 1948, as a counterpart of the historic Berlin institutes which were in Soviet-occupied Berlin. Frei Universität was a continuation of the previous Kaiser Wilhelm Institute founded in 1911 in Dahlem.
