Stralsund was an important administrative and defense fortress for the German territories of the Swedish kingdom. Scheele was born in Stralsund and when a young man moved to Sweden, where he lived the rest of his life. He learned Swedish, but he continued throughout his life to write his laboratory notes in his native German.
