The mining museum in Hettstedt, which occupies the Humboldt Palace, the home of the newly wed Wilhelm von Humboldt and his wife Caroline von Dacheröden, before leaving for Berlin. The copper and the silver industry in the Mansfeld district was famous; until the end of the 16th century this region was one of the three most productive in Europe (the other being Schwaz in Tyrol and Neusohl -- Banská Bystrica in present day Slovakia). This museum contains numerous geological, mining, and other cultural exhibits. The father of Martin Luther was a smelter operator here in the Mansfeld mining region.
