Further north on Via Archirafi at its intersection with Via Abrahamo Lincoln is the hotel where Emilio Segrè stayed during his sojourn in Palermo 1935-1939. Segrè obtained his Ph.D. under Enrico Fermi at the University of Rome. He was appointed Director of the Physics Laboratory at the University of Palermo in 1935. After 1938 he moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he and Seaborg confirmed the discovery of technetium.
