Segrè obtained his Ph.D. under Enrico Fermi at the University of Rome. He was appointed Director of the Physics Laboratory at the University of Palermo in 1935. After 1938 he moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he and Seaborg confirmed the discovery of technetium.
