This is the main shaft to the old nickel mine. In 1910 a mineral was discovered here by Olav Thortveit, who sent it in to Oslo for analysis. It was announced as the first scandium mineral in the world, with the formula (Sc,Y)2Si2O7. (Although scandium was originally discovered in euxenite and gadolinite, it was only an minor impurity.) From this area 50 kg of the mineral thortveitite was excavated. This mining ceased in 1961.
