Narvik, Norway/501

Previous | Home | Next

Even though Narvik is above the Arctic Circle its climate is surprisingly mild, owing to the Gulf Stream. The sun is below the horizon for almost two months in the winter; the midnight sun lasts for a corresponding period in the summer. Because of twilight, one cannot see stars from the last of April to the first of August. Narvik was founded as an ice-free port for the iron mines. The northern part of the railway just taken is the old iron mining route to transport ore to Narvik.
