Detailed maps in this remote region are difficult to obtain. Before Glasnost Ekaterinburg was a completely closed city, with details of its industrial activity held secret; Francis Gary Power in his U-2 spy plane of 1960 was shot down in the vicinity of Ekaterinburg. Only recently have topographical maps become available (see below). The village of Berezovsky is seen about 10 km northeast of Ektaberinburg (left), and the location of the original "red lead of Siberia" sight is marked with a red disc. Ekaterinburg is pronounced "Yekaterinburg" and sometimes is spelled as such on maps. Ekaterinburg was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great and named for Catherine the Great, was formerly known as Sverlovsk. Ekaterinburg is well known as the execution site of the Romanovs (Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and five children) in 1918 after the Russian Revolution. Map adopted from Hamilton Global Management, "Atlas of Russia -- All Oblasts, Krays, and Republics"; portion of Sverdlovsk Oblast Red scale and waypoint added..
