The Urals are a chain of aging mountains that were created 250-300 million years ago as the supercontinent islands Siberia and Baltica collided, affording geological hydrothermal processes for mineral separation, concentration, and crystallization. Over the ages the mountains have undergone considerable erosion, and the usual appearance is of a low-lying ridges, as appears here. In this general area, near Nizhniy Tagil (30 km east), the first major Russian platinum discoveries were made in the early 1800s. This view is ¼ km west of the monument shown in the next two photos.
