This is an example of a platinum placer from the famous Nizhny-Tagil Massif, which is located roughly 35 km southwest of Nizhniy Tagil, near the village of Visim. The Nizhy-Tagil Massif has produced more platinum than any other site in the world. As platinum was being produced in the Nizhniy Tagil area in the early 1800s, it was sent to St. Petersburg where it was coined 1828-1844.
