Since we are most interested in the Mendeleev Museum, we are taken first to Vasily Island. This is Birzhevaya Ploshchad (Birzhevaya Square) at the Neva River split, at the extreme east end of Vasily Island. Two red "Rostral columns," one of which is visible here, greet the flowing river as it flows and divides at the Neva split. These columns were built in 1811 as lighthouses to guide ships. The Mendeleev Museum is less than 1/2 kilometer to the west on Mendeleevskaya liniya.
