The Mendeleev family moved to the village of Verkniye Aremzyany after tragedy struck and the father was became blind and had to leave his post as director of the gymnasium. The mother took up the management of a glass factory in Verkniye Aremzyany. At the glass factory young Mendeleev learned the rudiments of chemistry. Mendeleev moved back to Tobolsk when he was 7 years old for schooling in the gymnasium.
