Michael's Gate is the only remaining gate into the medieval town of Bratislava, Slovakia. In the 1500s the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) threatened Europe, and because of its threatening advances westward, the city was designated as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, now known by its Hungarian name Pozsony. It was known by this name under the Habsburg monarchy from 1536 to 1783. Just beyond the metal post in the middle of the walkway is a plaque flush with the cobblestones (see next photo).
