As his health failed, to his devoted friend Wöhler he wrote "Dear Wöhler, please work hard as long as you have the strength. You cannot imagine what a creature man becomes when he begins to get old." His memory failed; he could not remember the chemicals in some of his bottles, leading him sadly to destroy the contents.
