In the area of mining and inorganic chemistry, Paracelsus recognized bismuth, antimony, zinc, and arsenic, and perhaps was the first to prepare arsenic in its elemental form. Paracelsus learned his mineralogy in mining area of Villach, Austria, where his father in 1502, and he became acquainted with various miners' illnesses there.
