The Tüfelsbrugg (the local dialect for Teufelsbrücke = Devils Bridge) dates from the year 1117. In 1517 the first stone bridge was built. This indicates that during Paracelsus first years here, the bridge was wooden. The old spelling, during the time of Paracelsus, was Teüfelsbrug. "Etzel" refers to the region north of this area, which is of higher elevation and blocks the flow of the river directly into the Zürichsee (Zürich Sea).
