Berkeley, California/berkeley236Previous | Home | NextThis is the view looking southward from Lawrence's historic laboratory on the third floor of (old) LeConte Hall. Several years after Lawrence's pioneering work in LeConte 329, in a laboratory on the right (west side of LeConte), Corson and MacKenzie worked together (assisted in their chemical separations by Segrè) to discovered astatine from a bismuth sample irradiated with alpha particles by the 40-inch cyclotron in Crocker Hall. (The exact laboratory is not known; the room number has not been recorded and Corson, the only surviving member, does not recall). |
