"Irradiated, or 'hot', samples from the Graphite Reactor are transported to adjacent 'hot cells' in a heavy lead shield called a 'pig'. Radiation levels are measured constantly.
In a 'hot cell' building near the Graphite Reactor, an irradiated sample is inserted into a port a the top of a cell with long-handled tongs. A hot cell is a very small room with thick concrete walls that shield the radiation. Chemical processing converted the chemical samples into radioisotopes that were used for scientific and medical research. A worker's exposure to radiation at this distance was limited to eight seconds."
