This photo is taken from the western end of the original site of the Chemistry Laboratory complex; the view is northeastward along Central Avenue. Much of the original wooden buildings have been replaced by modern brick buildings. At this end was located Glendenin's laboratory, where promethium was isolated and identified. Even though the group leader was Coryell, it was called "Glendenin's laboratory" because it was he and Marinsky who did the research in their laboratory. The research involved the recently developed ion exchange chromatography technique (using Amberlite) to separate uranium fission products. The next building, partially hidden in the trees, is the original wooden structure (see next photo).
