FALL 2007
To aid in preparations for examinations, here is some information that may be useful:
* My office hours on Monday are 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (I am also available other hours, but you may want to set up an appointment with me to be sure I am in my office during other times.) Also, at some hours, graduate students are available in the CRC to aid with physical chemistry questions.
In order that you may see what previous exams in this course have looked like, last year's exams are posted below. These are simply provided in order that you may see the types of questions that may be asked. Numerous exercises/problems from the text have been assigned in order for you to gain plenty of problem-working experience - and, the solutions to those exercises/problems are given in the suggested student solution manual.

EXAM 3 | 2005 | |
EXAM 4 | 2005 | |
Important note: The exam questions will require you to apply the knowledge that you gained in: (1) reading/studying the text, (2) reading/studying the class notes and other material covered in lecture, and (3) completing and understanding the assigned exercises/problems. Again, the exam does not entail a simple replication of assigned exercises, but, rather requires you to apply the knowledge that you have gained.
*** It is much better to be over-prepared for the exam than under-prepared for the exam!!! ***
*** START STUDYING FOR THE EXAM WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE EXAM DATE! ***
The exams in this semester's 5200 course will be ~90 minutes and will typically entail ~4-6 questions.
Here is what can be expected at the top of the exam:
R = 8.31451 J/K mol = 8.20578 x 10-2 L atm/K mol1 J = 1 kg m2 / s2 1 Pa = 1 N/m2 = 1 kg/m s2 1 atm = 101325 Pa = 760 Torr
In general, no formulas will be given.
Further information about EXAM 1:
Exam 1 will cover Chapters 1 and 2 of the 8th edition of the Atkins text. (This material is the same as Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of the 7th edition!)
For EXAM 1, you do NOT need to know the following information (material listed in reference to the 8th edition):

- "Impact on Biochemistry and Materials Science (part of page 46 through almost the middle of page 47)
