Brazil/brazil213Previous | Home | NextBelo Horizonte ("beautiful horizon" in Portuguese), the capital of Minas Gerais, is 330 kilometers north of Rio de Janiero. Belo Horizonte is the third largest city in area in Brazil, after Rio de Janeiro and Sãu Paulo. The view is southwest. The range of mountains in this view is Serra do Curral, a ridge which encircles the city on the east side of the Belo Horizonte. Over the ridge, to the extreme left of this view, lies Sabará, a historic gold center of Brazil, 13 km away. At Sabará when it was the gold center of the region two hundreds year ago, there was occasionally a contamination of palladium, which rendered the gold brittle. Palladium is particularly rich in the mountains in the area. Courtesy, Winkpolve, under GNU License. |
