Rio de San Juan, flowing southward, and Rio Arato, flowing northward, appear to join but are separated by a thin strip of land only 4 km wide. The two rivers actually flow into different oceans! (Rio San Juan into the Pacific, and Rio Arato into the Atlantic). Rio Baudo is a minor river flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Platinum was found in Rio de San Juan and its myriad of tributaries. The original name of platinum was "platina di pinto," meaning "puny silver of the Pinto River." Platina was a derogatory term given because the metal appeared as silver but could not be melted and was difficult to work. Rio Pinto was the recorded site of the original discovery, supposedly a tributary of Rio de San Juan, but Rio Pinto cannot be found on modern maps and its exact location is unknown. See next photo for expansion of modern map.
