"1706 Epsom becomes a very well organized spa. The first Assembly Rooms for a spa in England were built and marks the height of the Wells fame.
1740 Social Activities offered by the Spa eclipsed the importance of the waters and the old Well was closed and the bottling and the manufacture of its salts ceased, although a more modern form is still manufactured today.
1804 Demolition of the old well-house took place but the Well was left intact.
1851 Due to local pollution, the water in the well was pronounced unfit for human consumption.
1989 The present setting was built.

AN OFTEN QUOTED EPITAPH
Here lies I and my three daughters
Died from drinking the Cheltenhause Waters
If we had stuck to Epsom Salt
We shouldn’t be lying in these cold vaults."
